When our older Yorkie-(9 pounds) could no longer get up on the sofa to lay by us, we found a child size stuffed chair in Target and placed it in front of the sofa for him as a half way up - he was able to easily lift himself into the chair and then onto the sofa. He sadly has gone to the Rainbow Bridge, but our new little pup (4 pounds) has learned to use this. We also have covered different size foam blocks with fabric (from JoAnne's fabric Store).
