As far as hurting - this can vary and may also depend on how full the anal glands are.
It has always hurt my dogs to have their anal glands expressed. But, your dog is already uncomfortable if he is scooting around the floor. And - if anal glands need expressing and it isn't done - they get worse and more painful as it worsens -- often leading to infection and more serious problems.
When I have it done at the vet's office - she is quick and she also injects medication to prevent other problems.
It needs to be done.
It's kind of like going to the dentist - we may not like to go - but we need to go.
Take your puppy to the vet and think of the discomfort and possible problems you will be keeping her from having in the future. And -- and she may not experience much discomfort after all.
