Baking soda on the skin can be really irritating and change the pH balance of the skin making it more prone to opportunistic infections. I second the idea about asking the vet to rule out any type of infection that's causing the smell. If you think it's just from rolling around in the yard, then a quick wipe down with a warm wet wash cloth should do the trick between regular baths.
