Not silly at all, it's supposed to sound like a momma's heartbeat, and works with many puppies. Now they even have made various dolls and pillows with the heartbeat sound. Here's a pillow. Amazon.com: Petstages Heartbeat Pillow: Pet...Amazon.com: Petstages Heartbeat Pillow: Pet... Your local pet store probably has something too, I'm not sure if many people have "ticking" alarm clocks!
