It could very well be the food. Unfortunately as I believe this still to be true the labeling on dog food does not have to fully disclose what is actually in it. If you had this kind of thing happen I would be reluctant to ever try that food again.
Often what happens is that something can sensitize the intestine so that it changes the flora and normal levels of bacteria can bloom to abnormal levels causing the symptoms you see. Stress can do it, foods or ingredients they are sensitive to can do it. Coccidia works that way causing coccidiosis and really any bad bacteria does. Bad bacteria is carried in the gut but you don't have the condition showing up until something changes then you get blooms or overproduction of the bad bacteria then symptoms appear.
