It would just be one possible consideration.
I wouldn't call it pain as much as discomfort.
My kids coughed, sneezed, noses wet/drippy (this is what required an antibio), hacked, choked.. They still aren't totally over it.
It's self limiting, so not all vets give antibios. Clavamox, doxy, and zithromax are fairly common. It does not cure the disease, but can cure secondary infections and is needed if pneumonia is suspected (or the vet feels strongly that it should be guarded against).
I used robitussin with some success, but I can't recommend you try that without talking to the vet. Both of my dogs got all nasally, so they both required antibiotics.
