All dogs are different and will establish their own rhythm for when they need to poop. My 2 boys have different needs and I have learned when their time is. Both go in the morning, Teddy again in the afternoon, Max after dinner, and then Teddy again before bedtime.
Don't think of it in terms of being tied to meals. Look at the big picture, the entire day. Establishing a routine for mealtimes and activity (walks are beneficial) each day helps establish your pup's body rhythm so that you can anticipate potty times.
