That same thing happened to Maddie a few years ago, but the vet just used a pointy hemostat and pulled it right out. Then, just last week, my sister took her dog to the vet and same thing! Her vet also removed it on the spot. It's a bot fly larvae. I thought the fly had to lay an egg on the animal, but my sister was told they can lay their eggs anywhere and if the dog or human comes in contact with it and the egg just implants on them. Gross indeed. I totally freaked when Maddie had hers. If I remember right, it happens more in hot, humid weather.
