I agree with Ellie May......the secret to being successful is confinement and catching the accident when it happens and correcting it immediately. When an accident happens, scold and bring the pup to where you want him to go, then confine.

You must decide whether you want to use pads or outside but using both be confusing. My husband and I chose pads b/c we don't want to bring our dogs outside as they are too small. We used a small pen and covered the floor with pads. Gradually pick up one pad at a time over a period of days until the dog is only using the one pad. If there is a mess-up, put all the pads back down. It is tedious and takes LOTS of time and consistency but is well worth it. Another tip is that the puppy is confined if you aren't actively playing with him or both eyes aren't on him at all times. Why? B/c that is when you catch accidents and correct them. It was very hard for me, and especially my hubby, to have such a cuddly, cute, puppy locked in her pen most of the time but it is utterly necessary for potty training.
