They didn't tell you what they did?
You may be looking at an infection/abscess. In that case, my vet would be doing Animax into the area plus maybe Baytril or Metronidazole by mouth. If it is still swollen and you aren't giving meds, then time to ask the vet why they didn't prescribe any or get a second opinion.
I would not worry about the possibility of removal being necessary for this one infection. This happens all the time and very, very few pups have to have them removed.
