It may or may not be parasites.....however, the best way to determine is to have a fecal examination.

How long ago did you have his anal glands expressed and by whom? At times they are not done properly. Chewing around the tail is a sign of anal glands requiring to be expressed.

Since you live in TN do you have your dog on heartworm meds. If so, the meds take care of a broad spectrum of parasites...dependent on what heartworm med you use. The only thing they do not take care of is tapeworms
