When cat's are cornered they can be ferocious with there claws. It's the main reason why I refused to declaw my cat, it's her only source of protection. Even though she's a house cat, there's always a chance she could slip out without my knowing. If my yorkie sees a cat in the yard, she may bark at it followed by a yawn. In other she doesn't feel the least bit threaten by it.
I agree. I think it sounds like the cat was old and overweight. It could have been dead already. I have had dogs and cats all my life. In my adult life I always have kept my cats inside. Then we moved into a rural wooded area. There is a large population of feral cats here because people dump their unneutered cats here. I used to ignore them but then my young granddaughters started taming them. We have done what we could to spay and neuter as many as we can. Cats are domestic animals that have been failed by the human population. If a dog or predator attacks them they head for the nearest tree or will stand and fight if they have to. The cat that was found dead sounds like someone's pet that may have gotten away from the owner and died. No one's fault. I would, however, be concerned if I really thought my dog, big or small, enjoyed killing. Even hunting dogs do not kill. They are trained to retrieve. If a dog enjoys killing and happens to get out the wrong door, like the front door, that is a big liability. When I lived in town I would walk my dog with an eye out for the people whose dogs would run out the front door when they opened it and take off after my little dog or the nearest squirrel or cat. That is bad behavior not natural instinct.
