My yorkie is purebred but her hair will not grow that well either. One reason why is because she has HORRIBLE allergies. She takes weekly allergy injections and is also on an RX to control her immunity to so many allergens. Her hair became brittle and she started pulling her hair out and chewing her feet and skin until she bled. It took them several test and finally we realized Pixie is allergic to multiple things, ranging from fleas to grass. The poor baby has been through the ringer. She stays on flea meds and we keep our yard sprayed, but well you know fleas on occasion if a flea gets on her and has the opportunity to crawl and worse if it bites before it dies she will itch for days. Our Vet said seeing/treating allergies are getting more and more common on small breed dogs because people are not allowing them to run and play outside to expose them to different allergens while they are young to build up antibodies against those very things that they later can not tolerate. We purchased her when she was 4 months old, her feet had never hit the ground to be walked so within 2 months of us having her and "walking" her, allowing her to play in the grass her allergies began. Also something else my vet informed me that we did not know at the time (nor did the breeder), but her dad was gold and chocolate, he was not the standard blue/gold color (very beautiful though). Apparently when mating a standard yorkie with a chocolate/gold can lead to a weakened immune system and can cause allergies which can also cause the "brittle hair". The reason I mention this is because your precious pups hair reminds me of how my yorkie had gotten at the beginning of us trying to figure out what was going on. After we began treatment for her allergies and she was put on meds for weakened immune system her hair became silky soft again and began growing. So if she gets itchy really easy you may want to have allergy test performed. Just thought I would share. Your baby is beautiful and man what a smile!! |
