Hi everyone, i will try and keep this as short as possible
earlier this year my yorkie was blocked and couldnt pee
his urethra was totally blocked so after many tests and visits
to specialists etc they removed the stones blocking his pee
then we did a bile acids test, which came back as pre 54 post 116
they then suspected MVD as he had none of the liver shunt signs
before this incident we knew nothing for 18 months
happy , healthy puppy, never noticed he was sick in any way.
there was a large stone they saw so we operated and it was removed
and they took a liver biopsy , well the result came back that he had a liver shunt, not MVD, even though when they were in there they said the liver looked normal and no shunt was visible, the stone was sent to Hills USA and tested as a urate stone,so this was in april
since then we have had him on the Hills UD and allopurinol ,denamarin and lactulose and a few nights a week i will give him pasta with vegies and cottage cheese, this has been working fine , still no shunt signs etc
hes not underdeveloped or anything else ive read about the shunt signs
well yest we noticed him constantly trying to pee in the squat position- its not blocked he can pee but he must have the urge
i was horrified this was happening again and so soon

i took him to the vets today, he didnt really do anything
he wasnt impressed i was feeding him anything but UD
his impresion is UD for life and thats it
so now we are going to play it by ear and see what happens, he mentioned a surgery they can do where they make the pee hole larger for the stones to fall out for dogs that get them frequently
to be honest im in australia and no one is experienced with this
ive done most of the reasearch myself online
ok i have quite a few questions , sorry, just so much unanswered
questions , so much info online im not sure what to do'
ok first the Hills ud, ive read horrors about the ingredients
im thinking to get him off it and onto a good quality low protein food
ive looked into dalmatians who have the problem with urates and it seems to work for some, advice? i cant see how he can be on UD forver
with no protein!! does anyone know a good quality food ?
ive read about innova , we have that her is australia
the allopurinol, the vet tells me its for life, i read online
shunt dogs shouldnt have this , or for long periods, also that it causes xanthine stones, not sure what to do here
should i continue this?
should i still be giving him lactulose and denamarin if he has no neurological signs? can the denamarin be given long term?
ive just ordered some ph strips so i can check his urine myself
when they tested it was 6
has anyone had a dog with urate stones and what has worked for you?
like i said earlier scooter has no shunt signs at all,
so really im trying to avoid the stones
any info would be greatly appreciated, its so confusing out there
some sites say raw, some so ud, im confused!!!
thank you so much for any adivice
