I have seen something similar happen to my little dogs from time to time. If I noticed them out in the yard - having a very difficult time going to the bathroom, I bring them in and examine them. More often that not, they have poop that has dried and hardened right outside their anus. This needs to be removed. It is hard, dry, and stuck to them -- making them unable to pass anything else.
This is also one of the reasons that we keep the hair around their anus trimmed very short. When this is done, the poop has nothing to adhere to and can't stay there so easily and become hardened.
Sounds like whatever you did (in the shower) helped things get going.
I am sure he is perfectly fine now and should also feel 100% better.
