My dogs play fight all the time and it sounds like they are killing each other, but I just pull them apart if they get too aggressive, I would never hit any of my animals. They have bit me before when I tried to break them up from arguing, but I just put them on the floor. It sounds like your mom just over reacted and thought Callie was going to hurt Sammy. She probably feels bad about it now. Just cuddle up with Callie and rest.
