I don't always necessarily think you should just look at the protein % number alone, either. It all depends on where the protein is coming from. For example, one food could derive a lot of protein from plant-based sources, whereas another does from meat. A dog could do well on a lamb-based food with 37% protein but not a chicken-based food with 37% protein. I don't think one should only look at the number. Ingredients and the company it's coming from are equally important, if not more.
But in general, I think 37% is pushing it. Seems a bit unnecessary. I think more active dogs do need more protein but most pet Yorkies won't.... I have always fed high protein foods but never as high as 37%.
As for the puppy food, I don't think it's entirely necessary. There are so many all life stages foods out there and I think that, in general, "puppy" and "senior" and breed specific foods are a gimmick. An adult dog can eat a senior food and be fine and a puppy can usually eat an adult food and be fine. Large breed pups must watch out for phosphorus and calcium levels though. |
