I think 20-25% is good. My adults stay between 18-30ish% when possible. But then a lot of people think a dog can't have too much protein, so to each their own...
Protein has never been shown to cause kidney damage in a well done study, but it does have to be metabolized and the body has to get rid of the nitrogen, so the liver and kidneys are certainly hard at work. That isn't stress that I want my dogs' livers and kidneys to have to deal with.
