That is interesting that the vets say it doesn't make the cuticle withdraw. I don't trim my boys' nails because they keep them worn down fairly short from walking on the pavement. Not sure what that means for their cuticles.

There is no one answer for how often to trim. Depends on how rapidly the nails grow on the individual dog. If the nails are starting to curl, it is time to cut. If you can hear them clicking on hard flooring, it is time to cut.

I still believe in doing a little at a time if the nails are overgrown. Do a little and wait a couple of days before doing a little more.
