I started with potty pads and then began taking him out frequently throughout the day. I would also keep an eye on him to see when he would go over to the pad and quickly get him outside. When he was going outside pretty consistently I removed the pad since it was too convenient for him to go there when he was feeling lazy. I put the pad in the basement for him to use when the weather was bad or if we left home for a long time. Now he does a kitchen dining room walk to let us know he has to go or will whine at the door. He occasionally will go downstairs on the pad if he can't get our attention or if it is an emergency. I cannot ask for more. This is exactly how we wanted him trained. BTW I tried the potty bell but he was afraid of it.
He is now 1 1/2 years old.
