I don't think it is the internal organs as much as the size of the pelvis. The older the bitch the harder her bones become. This "makes" delivery of puppies thru the birth canal more difficult for her. Once a younger bitch has whelped her pelvis may stay a bit larger for life. Thus assuring she "may never" have whelping problems baring any unusal complications.
