I had my cat before I got my yorkie, while they are not the best of friends, they are able to co exist. In my case, the cat was a stray kitten (had her for 9 yrs before I got Brandi) and Brandi was a rescue I got at the age of 7. So both of my were older and very much set in their ways. There's the occassional argument when the want mommie's attention at the same time but for the most part, they pretty much get along. We manage to sleep together in the same bed.
Just be sure to put the cat food and litter box somewhere up high. For some strange reason my yorkie thinks cat poop are treats.
