Hi Denise,

The conventional wisdom is 2 meals per day, but some dogs do better with smaller, more frequent meals, and some require free feeding, leaving the food down all day. There is a poll in the polling section about it. My boys are over 2 years old and they still eat 3 times a day.

My personal, non-expert opinion is that one large meal per day especially for a smaller dog is not ideal for metabolism, blood sugar, and other body processes.

Has this always been your pup's eating pattern, or is this a recent development? Could heat be a factor? My little guy waits to eat until after his walks in the warm weather.

What else is going on during the day? Are you with him all day, or is he maybe nervous about being alone? Many dogs won't touch their food when their people leave home or are about to leave home.
