Are the steps carpeted? If not, I'd probably recommend putting a runner on them for now to protect the baby from any hard knocks. I just have a couple of very, very low steps. In fact, there is one low step onto a landing from the patio and then one more low step onto another landing before you go in the back door. It is all carpeted and I put a rug down on the concrete so she wouldn't bust her "noggin'" in the process of learning. The first week she was climbing up them by using her little toe nails to hold on. It was very cute. There was no way for her to fall and hurt herself, since it is a wide landing and if she didn't make it up the step, well, her back feet were still on the bottom.
