I got my yorkie when my son was 1.5 yrs old. I chose to get a bigger one b/c young children are just that, especially boys. I was afraid that a smaller yorkie wouldnt make it. My dog is 9-10 lbs now and boy am I glad I got a big one. My nephew recently came over (a little over one) and he was terrified of Sassie. After about an hour he started to go over to her, and by the end of the 3-4 hour babysitting I was running after him, running after her. My son was also scared of her when we first got her, but that only lasted a couple of days. The only thing is, that puppies like to bite and chew everything in sight, so while the puppy may just be trying to play, your middle child may think it is trying to bite. I think if you get a yorkie, you definitely should get a larger one. If you really want a small one I would wait.
