I definitely wouldn't say he can never swim again. But some of the pools I've been in have been so heavily chlorinated that I'd ask a vet first.

BTW, you might want to bring up the yelping incident on Thursday. If the vet thinks it is related (really have no idea if it is), then the vet's plan could change a bit. If there is any reason to believe he has had a chronic and mild issue all along, the vet may have additional thoughts on what to do for his diet.
