I went to a charity auction once where one of the items was a Golden Retriever pup. The bid went over $22K, then the winner ceded the dog to the next highest bidder but still donated the amount of his bid anyway. So the charity got the winning bid and the next highest bid for a total of over $43K. The breeder was a veterinarian and also a benefactor of the charity, and the dog came with neuter, all vet care, and grooming for life (so that she could keep track of the dog for it's entire life).
