I am so, so sorry. The decision to put down is the hardest, I think sometimes harder than losing them suddenly because you wrestle with yourself so on if it's the right thing to do. You're a very caring, giving person, I can tell that from just reading you. You tried your best to give him a really loving home, and that's more than you could have ever done for him.
