It doesn't seem all that odd to me but maybe that's because I have an OCD dog
It sounds more like obsessive behavior. Try taking the toy away for a couple of days and see what happens. My Cooper is obsessed with his ball. He won't play with anything else but he lays with his ball, plays with it, brings it to bed, etc. If I take it away he'll start acting more normally and begin focusing on other things.
It's hard though because he really loves his ball.
