They figure out about the cast real fast, and hold up the leg and want to run......
Which leg broke, and where was the break? Our little guy broke his right front leg, both bones between the elbow and wrist. Took him to the Emergency vet who knocked him out, and reduced the fracture (got the bones back in line), then put it in a cast. No activity for a Month....come back in a week, check out the Cast, and in 2 weeks, come back for an X-Ray.
Well, we took him back in a Month, and I said since we are here, lets do an X-Ray now and see if it is healing well? Well, X-Ray showed that the bones sperated again. Took him to a Board Certified Surgeon who knocked him out, and put a tiny plate and screws in it, and then put the leg in a splint. Same deal, no activity.....We took him back every week to have the splint re-wrapped, and at the end of 4 weeks, an X-Ray that showed a perfect heal, and then he was on light duty (Walking, no running for another 2 weeks), then go for it. The leg is perfect. No limp, no nothing. The little nut still will jump if you let him, so we are careful with both of the spice boys. Little dog bones are harder to mend than large dog bones....Said if it was my Large Cane Corso, chances are the cast would have worked, but for a Yorkie, over 90% of that type of leg break will require surgery for a good outcome. Best of luck to you. It is harder on you than on the pup! Basil was around 4 1/2 months old when it happened. Now 8 months and as fast as Superman. |
