Chloe got HORRIBLE ear infections when she was a smaller puppy. They were just awful and she would cry and scratch furiously at her ears. When I went to the vet he told me that her ear hair was supposed to be plucked out because otherwise it holds in moisture which can cause ear infections. We treated the ear infections with antibotics and they plucked her ears. Ever since then I try to pluck her ears but I havent had to do it as much, but I still do it about once every 2 months. I think it all depends on wether your dog is prone to ear infections or not. I would recommend doing it though becuase ear infections are just so horrible.
