I do not have a set time I leave the clamp on. If a mom is in eminent danger of having another baby too soon after the previous one to clean it up. I use the same clamp that I do for dew claws. It is called a curved mosquito and is a small surgical instrument. I clamp atleast 1 inch from the baby's umbulicus. I keep puppy warm and roughly rub it to stimulate breathing. I sometimes swing the baby but only ONCE. No shaken baby injuries here. I use a small infants ear syringe to suction the baby. By the time this is done I hack at the cord between the clamp and the tummy and then, and ONLY then, do I tie. Usually I do not need to do that..This also gives me time to check for abnormalities such as cleft palate, limb deformities and umbilical hernias for some examples. Helping with the cord when a mom is having a hard time chewing it in half can help prevent the umbilical hernas that are caused by the mom's tugging so hard. JMO
