My boy is the one who taught me his signal. We take them out on a pretty regular schedule now so he knows what to expect and usually just waits until it's walk time. But when he was little, he would sit at the door and stare at me until he got my attention. Then if I asked him if he had to potty, he would get excited and run to the front door. He made his needs pretty clear. It was just a matter of me learning to understand what he was trying to tell me.
My girl never gives any signal. When she has to go, she has to go now. We got her a potty patch and a doggy door for our balcony and she just goes when she needs to. That works for us.
Of course, we are moving next week and won't have a doggy door anymore, so she and I will have to learn a new way to communicate. I think if we can stick to a consistent schedule, she will learn to anticipate potty time and wait for it, as long is it is frequently enough. They are over two now so they can hold it much longer than when we first got them.
Good luck with the training. |
