I think it's great that you want to do this! I have never sat on a Board, but my mother has. She has sat on 4 Boards and from my experience, people choose their board members based on the money they can bring into the organization OR the intellectual chops they can bring to the table...based on the type of organization. This is soley based on my experience though...some organizations that you are looking at may be different.

I know that my mom was chosen to be on one of her Boards after many years of volunteering for an organization. Volunteering is a good way to get on board and work with an organization you feel passionately about.
