I used to get the rat comment all the time with Biscuit(RIP) and I would just inch a little closer to anyone saying it and he would snarl his upper lip and growl at them (ok so that wasnt really nice of me
) That almost always stopped the comments.
I haven't had much of that with Trixie....but friends of ours do howl with laughter when then see her in her stroller
