I confine my pup to the kitchen with everything he needs when I'm gone - and leave my other dog loose to roam around the rest of the house. I have never seen any problem, but then I'm not here to see what goes on.
Anyway - this is the way it has to be for now. We have no other choice.

I do know my dog that is loose is usually at the other end of the house sleeping when I leave. And, I can tell often that they have both been sleeping when I get home. They are both yawning and stretching when I first walk in.

I think the best way to tell is by the way they act when you're there. If one is in the crate and the other is loose - is it a problem then? If not, it will probably not be a problem when you're gone either. And --- they'll probably get used to and adjust to whatever way things have to be. Don't worry. The little one won't be in the crate forever -- hopefully!!!!
