My Gracie (RUP) was a silky as they come, but a collar or sweater would make her mat too! If your Yorkie has a cottony coat...don't even try to let it grow long! Just keep her in a puppy cut or a Scnauzer cut. Scruffy (RIP) had cottony hair and looked precious in his little Schnauzer cut!
