My thought is that his bladder just needs to grow a bit. I'm sure lots of mom with babies also wish they would sleep through the night, but it usually doesn't happen. I think it's better that he tells you he needs to go, rather than going in his crate. Also, when you take him out to pee, don't do anything else. No play, no cuddling. As another poster mentioned to someone else, the last thing you want is to turn this into attention time.
