It is important to educate on what can cause higher propensities to snap, in humans or other creatures. It's also important to punish appropriately for dog fighting and cruelty.

I don't know what the solution is to this ongoing problem, but I do know it's not about outlawing a breed. When you outlaw *any* breed and set a precedence, more breeds will follow.
My feelings on this; I do not believe in the breeding of Pitbulls, but it has nothing to do with their being mean or aggressive as some have called them. I do not believe they should be bred due to the high volume in shelters that are being put down every minute. Not every hour, not weekly, but by the minute. Got to petfinder.com and see how many pits are listed. Talk to NY City Animal Control (who by the way suck. They do not even give a chance to these dogs. If they even get a cold, they are immediately put down) The majority of their dogs and I'm talking probably 99 percent are Pitbulls. Not adults being put down but young puppies because they cannot be placed. I think until THIS IS UNDER CONTROL THE BREEDING OF PITS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. Personally, I will say that in the past I felt they were dangerous, but belonging to quite a few rescue groups and seeing the postings on my FB page and reading etc. I feel that they are a good, loyal breed with good temperment. I think the problem lies in the people that are owning them. They are not being properly taken care of, socialized or trained and then we have the people that use them and encourage them to be aggressive. Personally, I think our Yorkies are more likely to bite somene then a Pit, however the difference is our Yorkies won't kill you from a bite. Personally, over the months I've grown to love the Pit breed, and would one day like to be more involved with their rescue, but I would not chance taking one in my home with small Yorkies. You can have a great dog with people, but one that does not like small animals. This is the same for Greyhound, they are great dogs but MOST won't say all because there is always an exception, but most will kill a small animal as this is how they were trained. Anyway, some may disagree with me, but that is my feeling on the breeding of Pits. Too many being put to death, moreso then any other breed so why bring more in that have a high percentage of this fate. Elaine
