Unleashed dogs are my pet peeve too - big or small. Of course, the big ones are more intimidating if you have a small dog - cause we've all heard about yorkies getting killed in a fight - sometime unintentionally.
Since I usually only have time to pick up one when I see one barrelling at us - Lucy gets picked up. Ringo is three times her size and very muscular.
However, I don't feel it's fair he should have to defend himself at the end of the leash (and he's usually more aggressive that way); so sometimes I will let his leash go - so he and the strange dog will hopefully not fight.
I did tell this guy off the other day though - his dog made a beeline for Lucy with his nose right up on her. I snatched her up and told him off.
They usually never even say 'sorry'. Pi$$es me off!
