You should do the diet until the crystals are gone. Crystals turn into stones and stones need surgery to remove them. At the very least, you should add liquid to the food you are feeding as that helps with struvites. You can add some diluted chicken broth (onion free - walmart great value brand makes one, check the label).
You can also ask if you can use the product Uro-eze. That would get added to his regular food. I would still liquify the diet.
