I am always fighting hair in the eyes. If the hair is still attached to their heads, I use clean hands and/or a tiny flea comb to pull the hair out, carefully moving along the eyelid.

Never touch the eyeball itself.

What do the "things" look like? Sometimes my boys will have floating "boogers" from the hair that is in their eyes. These are clear or slightly white. I use a plain sterile saline eyewash to get these out. Never use eye washes that have any additives for redness, etc.

It is possible for dogs to have parasites in their eyes, so if the things look really odd, I would have the vet take a look.
