I don't think you're being overprotective at all. I think I'd consider the same if Princess went out often or didn't have to walk (run!) 3 flights of carpet to come in. That helps keep all of our feet cleaner.
And besides, I think we all have something special we do for each particular yorkie to make our lives & theirs easier.
