Every state requires by law a dog license that is issued only after proof of rabies vaccination. The license has to be renewed according to the vaccination law requirement: 1 to 3 years depending on where you live. (not sure where we are on the count of the number of states that have gone to 3 years)
Your vet's office should give you a copy of the certificate of vaccination to include with the registration paper that you file with your local government. Go to your city hall or county offices, or check on their website.
I lived in a suburb of Chicago that tied dog registration to car tags. No license for your dog, no car tags would be issued.
