You actually have to keep them on that food with no treats or anything for 2 months to figure out if they are allergic to the food. It's not just corn that they could be allergic to and so what you are trying to do is use a food that does not contain any of the foods that you were feeding them. Does that make sense?
And no, it is not harmful to use Benadryl on a daily basis. During the summer time when the allergens are worse, he has to have 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening along with a fatty acid supplement. During the winter, we just cut him back to 1 in the evening.
I would suggest sticking with the diet for the 8 weeks and not feeding any treats or people food (this was the hardest part for me as he loves bones) and if that doesn't work, go to the vet and see what they say. While it's not harmful to have them on Benadryl, I would not recommend diagnosing your pup yourself as it is never good to medicate unnecessarily.
