Was the food beyond or close to the expiration date when your daughter purchased it? I have learned to check the expiration date when selecting bags and look for ones that are at least a year from expiring. Those are the freshest. Six months or less, try to avoid buying the bag.
Petsmart does have an obligation to monitor their expiration dates on stock on the shelves, same as human grocery market.
How was you daughter storing the food at home? Was the bag inside the house and was it sealed tightly? If so, I would contact Wellness.
