We use CET toothpaste daily, OraVet weekly, floss when I feel like it, and dentals as needed. Ellie has stage 3-4 periodontal disease (can't get much worse). She was all fixed off and has done amazingly well on with the above. There is some tartar build up, but not enough for a dental and her gums look good. It's been 3.5 years since her last dental.
We don't do any chewies around here at all. She can't have them, but I wouldn't anyway. JMO, they aren't important enough to take a risk. The softer ones do cause choking and obstructions, the harder ones can break teeth, and some of them carry loads of bacteria. Less potential emergencies and vet bills to just keep 'em out of the house.
