For chewing, I give my furkids bones from beef shanks. I have the butcher cut the shanks between 1/2 and 3/4" thick. It is a PERFECT size bone for Yorkies -- they absolutely CANNOT swallow them, they do not splinter and I have NEVER EVER known one to actually chew off pieces. The bones are very thick and hollow on the inside.
I use beef shanks to make soup, after they are cooked, I wash them thoroughly and dry them and WHAT A TREAT!

I make a lot of soup in the winter so there are beef shank bones all over the house. LOL
