I taught "come" similiar to how Joy recommended. I started with Joey a foot or 2 away where he could see and smell the treat in my hand. "Joey, come!" Naturally, he came immediately to get that treat. Progress to across the room. Lather, rinse, repeat many times! Then start calling from the next room over and gradually increase the distance that the pup has to come. Repeat, repeat, repeat. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving him a treat every time that he comes on the first request!
