I used to put several peices of newspaper on top of the puppy pad and change throw those out after every mess. Some smell gets through for them next time to the pages below. That way I only change the pad a couple of times a week. I found that my dogs don't like the coloured pages of the paper like the comic strips... only like to pee on the plain articles
